Cuckoo's are summer migrants to the UK arriving from mid April and leaving again in July & August. They now only occur locally in Surrey & Hampshire and are in decline across the UK. They favour Dunnocks, Reed Warblers, Pied Wagtails, and Meadow Pipits.


Chiffchaffs arrive from Africa from late March onwards, they are very common and nest annually across Surrey & Hampshire. Some birds overwinter in southern coastal counties in mild winters.



Tiger Craneflies are widespread & common in Surrey & Hampshire as well as across the UK generally. They can be seen from April to August in most types of grassland.


Common Blue Butterflies are common & widespread in Surrey & Hampshire as well as across the UK. They are the commonest blue butterfly in the UK.They can be seen on the wing from May to mid October.

May 30th Isington Hampshire Banded white-tailed bumblebees are common & widespread in Surrey & Hampshire. They place their nests in old burrows and cavities. They are mostly seen between March & November but sometimes all year round.

One of the most common and widespread cuckoo bees, particularly in the south of England. Widespread across Surrey & Hampshire, can be seen from May to September.

Grey Wagtails are predominantly resident birds in the UK and are locally moderately common in Surrey & Hampshire, they are most often seen close to running water where they nest from mid April to September.

Swallows arrive from Africa at the beginning of April & leave again in late October. They generally nest anywhere there are suitable supporting structures for their mud & feather nests, (barns, bridges, church porches, etc).

Canada Geese are both resident & migratory they are very common throughout Surrey & Hampshire as well as the rest of the UK. Nesting starts in April along the edges of ponds, lakes & rivers

Carrion Crows are very common across Surrey & Hampshire, they are solitary nesters and start nest building during late February/early/March.

Sweet Chestnut trees are deciduous and abundant throughout Surrey & Hampshire, they are one of the lastest British trees to come into leaf.

House Martins arrive from Africa from mid April onwards they are a declining species in Surrey & Hampshire and indeed across the UK generally. They build a bowl shaped mud nest under the eaves of buildings and bridges.

Rowan Blossom Rowan or Mountain Ash trees are moderately common in Surrey & Hampshire they flower in late April/early May, they produce clumps of scarlet berries from late July onwards into early autumn.

Mistle Thrushes are resident but sporadic across Surrey & Hampshire, they start nesting from February onwards.

Nuthatches are resident and fairly common in Surrey & Hampshire they start nesting in mid to late April usually in pre-drilled holes in trees, they always reduce the size of the hole diameter by applying mud around the entrance.


Little Egrets are resident & migratory have become locally common in Surrey & Hampshire, having formally been quite rare they have gradually spread across the UK. Nesting begins in late April usually close to water.



Tree Creepers are thinly spread residents and are local in Surrey & Hampshire, although there are indications that they are increasing in this area. They nest in the bark crevices of decayed trees from April onwards.
